Cute ways to wear shorts

Shorts and a tee or tank with flip-flops is a traditional summer staple. But it can get boring, day after day. So I thought I'd see if I could jazz it up a bit. *Note: Some of these items are pretty pricey for shorts or sandals. If you feel comfortable spending that much, more power to you! But these were the pictures I could find. Stores like The Limited, Ann Taylor Loft, Gap, any outlet store or discount stores like Ross or TJ Maxx are also excellent sources of similar items. Vintage stores or consignment shops can be a great place to find a special sparkly clutch or chiffon top for much less than department store prices.

1. For the gamine look, tuck a flowy sleeveless top into high waisted, belted shorts. Add flats or low sandals in a similar tone with a touch of sparkle. A sleek clutch will keep this look simple (and won't run a purse strap over your fluttery top). Also: don't ruin this look with a bra strap. Wear strapless, or if you can (lucky duck), simply go without. Think Kate Bosworth.

2. Acid-wash shorts are back, but be sure to wear them in a modern cut (no long loose cut-offs, please!). Top them with a brightly colored tee (I chose yellow) and multi-colored bag that ties it in. Stick with neutral shoes: white feels retro but here the shape isn't dated. Mellow the whole thing out with a soft gray scarf.

3. For a night out on the town, pair some menswear shorts with a simple black tank and sexy black booties. A glam bag with metallic detailing adds edge (and who doesn't love the sparkle?). Bonus: you could wear this exact outfit into the fall by adding tights, a cropped blazer and the scarf from above. Switch out the bag for a sturdy leather tote with buckles and zippers for the same metal glint.
