Valances and window treatments

Having now been in the blogging business for two and a half years, I like to watch the design trends come and go. And outside the walls of Elle Decor at least, the past few years have been void of valances. The on-trend curtains of choice were simple and clean drapes hung higher than the window. And while I still think this is a great look, sometimes it's fun to try something else, no? Lately I've been noticing pretty valances and pelmets (or cornices) gracing windows in magazines and all over the blogs. I think it's a very pretty look.

Valances are loose fabric, like a skirt:

Pelmets are constructed and upholstered (there are lots of DIY version in blogland):

Just don't fall victim to the overpowering swag (let's hope THAT never comes back into style!):

Do you prefer one style over another? Will you be embracing this style as it becomes more popular?
